Isle of Man Accommodation Grading System

Quality Standards and National Accessible Scheme (NAS)

Quality Standards

All visitor accommodation on the Isle of Man is registered with the Isle of Man Department of Economic Development (DED) This compulsory registration scheme was established under the Tourist Act 1975 and is designed to ensure that the standards of accommodation are maintained through annual inspection.

There are five levels of quality rating from one to five Stars. The Isle of Man Star Rating Standards are harmonised with those operated by Visit Britain, Visit Scotland, Wales Tourist Board, Visit Guernsey, Visit Jersey, and the AA (Hotels and Guest Accommodation).

Holiday hostels receive a Listed Classification and Grading, while campsites have a Listed or 1 – 5 Key Classification and Grading and have to meet minimum standard criteria.

A number of guest accommodation and self catering establishments have now been awarded Gold and Silver accolades which reflect the highest standards of quality, hospitality and services.

To help achieve this aim, new quality standards for visitor accommodation were introduced in Britain in 2006 and adopted in the Isle of Man the following year. The objective of the Common Standards is to have an easily understood and uniform method for grading visitor accommodation that is consistent and meets customers’ expectations.

Visitor accommodation on the Island falls into 6 categories:

  • Hotels
  • Self Catering Accommodation
  • Serviced Apartments Accommodation
  • Hostel
  • Campsite
  • Guest Accommodation (Guest House, B&B, Farmhouse, Guest Accommodation and Restaurant with Rooms)

National Accessible Scheme

The National Accessible Scheme (NAS) is the only scheme that rates the accessibility of visitor accommodation throughout England.
